I always admired when a flower would peek out from a crack within concrete; fascinated, I found it to be nature’s way of teaching me that even if things seem too hard, I should not allow it to stop me from blooming.

“My name is Ricci Rawls. I found my calling making clothes for people one day when I could not afford a dress for my children to wear on Easter. I had $3 to my name and found my way to a dollar store for a mask but left with a sewing kit and ribbon instead. Less than 24 hours later, I had prepared tutus and princess dresses for my daughters to wear on Easter, feeling a sense of joy after seeing those big smiles on their faces and a tingle of accomplishment.

I began my career journey with hard work and dedication. I got my business license in 2017 and was shocked when people wanted my work, so I began working and was very proud of myself as a single mother of five. A few years later I became displaced again but was still proud as I sent my oldest off to college as she became an artist.

Still optimistic and full of hope, I started reaching out to organizations that help others in need. One day, I walked into Dress for Success Greater Philadelphia looking for attire to wear to impress an important client looking for my services. Nothing other than speechless can explain how I felt walking into a place that wanted to help me!

I was immediately greeted with smiles and open arms. I was shown a room of outfits picked to my liking and size; given jewelry; and made ready to impress my future client so I could get my business off the ground floor. I must admit Dress for Success Greater Philadelphia made me feel like a million bucks. I felt like a person again. I knew I mattered, and people could now see me.

Now I work on small projects for homeless folks like me and others. I realized my calling isn’t about the clothes I make for people; it’s about helping them. I want to be like Dress for Success Greater Philadelphia and make a difference in people’s lives. To see others smile and give them hope. This is my journey to stability and success, and I want to thank Dress for Success for being a part of it with me for my family.”
