Toni-Ann Gurdon
From a tender age, I was exposed to life’s pressures. With the support of Dress for Success, I now use my lived experience to remove stigma and advocate for underrepresented voices in my community. I am honored that my story continues to inspire people to never give up on themselves.
Ten years ago, Toni-Ann (T-A) was a homeless teen. She was referred to us by her work coach for interview preparation and styling after battling chronic health issues. Despite our support, she was unsuccessful in her interview and her health deteriorated further, leaving her bed-bound for six years and grappling with mental health issues. However, we inspired her, made her feel heard.
In 2020, T-A began volunteering at the food bank that had supported her and quickly progressed to managing the project, which boosted her confidence and led to other volunteer opportunities. Her self-assurance grew, and she returned to Dress for Success Greater London in early 2023 for more interview prep and styling. Initially, anxiety and stress dominated, making it hard for her to even make eye contact.
With our consistent support and follow-up, T-A felt valued and cared for. She returned for a capsule wardrobe and participated in the Shein Curve Collection campaign. This experience significantly boosted her confidence and body image. Through Dress for Success, she developed a positive relationship with clothes, felt pampered, and appreciated. Our efforts have profoundly impacted her confidence and stage presence, eliminating her previous dread about what to wear.
